Seitan is a versatile ingredient that has been used for thousands of years. It is a convenient alternative to meat, made from wheat gluten.
Our producer makes a dough from wheat flour and then filters out the gluten. These gluten are flavored with traditional shoyu soy sauce and soaked in cider vinegar and water.
'Seitan' means 'made of protein' in Japanese and is obviously a good source of protein and minerals. With as much as 19% protein, our seitan is a worthy meat substitute.
Moreover, our producer uses only organic ingredients.
Seitan absorbs all flavors, making it a versatile ingredient to prepare in a plant-based lifestyle.
Cut into convenient slices, seitan can be breaded like seitan schnitzel, as well as baked, grilled or stir-fried. Cut seitan into small pieces to add to wok or soup.
Thanks to the shoyu, the slices are already nicely flavored, so you can also sprinkle them raw over your salad.
Seitan comes into its own as a vegetable protein source in a stew.
Preheat the oven to 180 degrees. Fry 2 onions and 2 cloves of garlic (cut into small pieces). Add strips of various mushrooms and cubes of carrot and sauté. Tear or cut seitan into small cubes and fry in a separate pan until brown all around. Add the seitan to the vegetables and deglaze with dark beer of your choice or mushroom broth. Add a spoonful of date syrup for a sweet touch. Spread spicy grain mustard on an old slice of bread and place mustard side down on top of the seitan. Season with plenty of pepper, rosemary, thyme and cloves (or go for our handy stewing spices). Cook for 2 hours in the preheated oven with the lid on the pot. Season to taste (seitan has already been marinated in soy sauce and will therefore taste slightly salty, so be sparing with salt). Delicious with jasmine rice (or fries).
