Royal kombu is the king of seaweeds. It is a type of kelp that grows wild in the Atlantic coastal waters and is sometimes called sugarweed.
Royal kombu tastes surprisingly sweet and slightly salty. When the seaweed washes ashore and dries, you can see a white layer forming. This is mannitol, a natural sweetener that has 0.7 times the sweetness of sugar. Hence the nickname sugar seaweed.
Our Royal kombu is from certified organic cultivation in Ireland's coastal waters. It is harvested using sustainable methods that respect the marine fauna and flora. Samples are extensively tested for heavy metals, pesticides and herbicides, radioactivity and microbiological contaminants.
This high purity Royal Kombu contains no fat or cholesterol, but is rich in iodine, magnesium, potassium and calcium. This seaweed grows wild and we harvest it by hand off the Spanish and Irish coasts.
Rinse the Kombu Royal well under running water. Kombu Royal is incredibly versatile. Steam, roast it, smoke it, cook it, stir fry it or wok it. Kombu comes into its own in soups (dashi) and sauces or as a flavoring for vegetable and fish dishes.
Royal kombu in combination with with mushrooms, miso, fish, fried, onions, tomatoes, provides a unique accumulation of refined, deep umami flavors.
Organically grown Kombu Royal, without any kind of additives or preservatives.
